Purple Vs. Violet

So growing up in school we learned about colors. The basic colors we learn are: red, orange, yellow ,green, blue and purple. Now that i go to art school i was told that purple is not a true color. The color is called violet. So why do all the school all over the country teach purple as a color? I don't understand this at all.
